Wide Ukraine Electricity Outages As Crews Struggle To Repair Damage From Russian Attacks

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues urging Western nations to increase pressure on the Kremlin as the death toll rises from recent Russian attacks and Ukrainian authorities struggle to restore electricity after massive strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure.

Kyiv and many regions across Ukraine faced large-scale blackouts as crews worked to repair facilities heavily damaged by Russian air assaults. According to the state energy provider Ukrenergo, power was reduced in most regions for 8 to 16 hours on November 9, with further restrictions scheduled for November 10.

"The reason for the introduction of restrictions is the consequences of massive Russian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities," the company said.

"It is difficult to recall such a large number of direct strikes on energy facilities since the beginning of the invasion," Ukrenergo spokeswoman Svitlana Hrynchuk told Ukrainian media.

In his nightly video address, President Zelensky emphasized the relentless efforts of repair teams.

"Repair crews are working almost around the clock in most regions. Restoration efforts are ongoing, and although the situation is difficult, thousands of people are involved in stabilizing the system and repairing the damage," he said.

Even before the arrival of winter, Russia intensified attacks targeting Ukraine’s power grid, gas facilities, and pipelines, seeking to undermine morale and force energy shortages across the country.
