Producers are reducing packaging sizes, from 187ml wine bottles to spirits in sleek aluminium cans, to cater to customers seeking convenience and variety. This shift follows the success of the ready-to-drink market and aims to attract new audiences.
Many spirit producers are moving away from traditional 750ml bottles, opting instead for cans. Bottle shops now offer a wide range of spirit-based drinks in aluminium cans, reflecting a consumer preference for portability and ease.
Wineries are also embracing smaller packaging. For instance, Australian Vintage introduced a 187ml bottle in its Poco Vino range, while Brown Brothers launched a compact aluminium bottle holding 750ml, much smaller than a standard glass bottle.
Andrew Shedden, premium general manager at Endeavour Group (EDG), which manages Dan Murphy's and BWS, stated, "Smaller wine packaging is only just hitting the shelves."
Smaller packaging is expected to spark a new phase of innovation in the Australian alcohol industry, with convenience emerging as a key factor for customers often described as 'promiscuous' in their drinking choices.
The Australian alcohol sector sees smaller packaging as a strategic move to meet evolving consumer preferences for convenience, variety, and portability.
