The first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 open with a chilling flashback to 1983, where Will Byers confronts Vecna in the Upside Down. Netflix has released this opening scene as a teaser for the highly anticipated final season, giving fans an intense return to Hawkins and the mysterious alternate dimension.
The episode titled “The Crawl” begins deep in the forest of the Upside Down during 1983, shortly after Will Byers disappears. A de-aged Noah Schnapp plays a scared 12-year-old Will, quietly singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” inside the Upside Down version of Castle Byers.
Will’s calm singing is interrupted by disturbing, guttural sounds before a Demogorgon breaks into the fort. Will fires a rifle in self-defense and briefly escapes by climbing a tree, but the creature drags him down and out of frame.
The screen fades to black and shifts to Hawkins Library in the Upside Down. There, the Demogorgon presents Will to Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower. Vecna steps out from the shadows and states:
“At long last, we can begin.”
Vines lift Will’s body against the wall, while a tentacle extends towards his mouth, releasing an unknown substance.
This opening scene revisits familiar moments and sets a suspenseful tone for the series’ final chapter.
