Florida’s 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux made his long-anticipated debut on Thursday night against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.
During Florida’s decisive 104–64 victory, the crowd of 10,065 fans erupted into chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli,” as the team celebrated the unveiling of its 2025 championship banner. With 2:09 left on the clock and the Gators leading 102–61, coach Todd Golden fulfilled the fans’ wishes by sending Rioux into the game.
“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old Canadian. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Although he did not score or record a rebound, Rioux’s appearance officially secured his place in history. He surpassed 7-foot-7 Kenny George of UNC Asheville (2006–08), becoming the tallest college basketball player ever.
Olivier Rioux’s debut marked a joyful and historic night in Gainesville, as the 19-year-old Canadian cemented his place as the tallest player ever to step on a college court.
