Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas stated she is seriously weighing a bid for the U.S. Senate. In an interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, the Democrat explained that she is investing in research to inform her decision.
“I’m seriously weighing it to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data,” the congresswoman said. “I’m a data-driven person. I believe Texas must try something new if it wants different results. That’s the bottom line.”
No Democrat has won a Senate race in Texas since 1988. Current Senator John Cornyn is seeking reelection next year for a fifth term. Crockett noted that any Democratic candidate will face a major challenge in defeating Cornyn.
“I’mma be flat-out with you and tell you that I don’t think there’s a Democrat that can take out Cornyn,” she remarked.
She mentioned that her choice to run would likely come late in the race. Crockett also claimed the National Republican Senatorial Committee is heavily funding Cornyn’s campaign, though this could not be independently verified as the NRSC did not respond to inquiries.
Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is carefully evaluating a Senate run, citing data analysis and the state’s need for political change as core motivators.
