Vasiliy Lomachenko, the talented Ukrainian boxer, confirmed his retirement in June, just over a year after defeating George Kambosos Jr to become a two-time world lightweight champion. His 21-fight career, including titles in featherweight and super-featherweight divisions, appeared to have more potential following his impressive win in Australia.
In an Instagram post, Lomachenko expressed gratitude for the clarity he gained about achieving success and acknowledged the influence of his father.
“I’m thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I’ve gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve victory. My father not only taught me the art of boxing but how to be a role model for my own children – the same way he has always been for me. I’ve made many mistakes in life, and in the gym, but he has always been by my side.”
The two-time Olympic gold medallist recently discussed his choice to step away from boxing during the WBO convention in Colombia, where his career was honored. Lomachenko attributed his retirement to a loss of motivation.
“It was not difficult because I lost my motivation.”
Despite recent reports linking him to a potential fight against Manny Pacquiao, Lomachenko addressed questions about a possible return to the ring but did not confirm any plans.
Vasiliy Lomachenko retired due to lost motivation, reflecting on his career and family support, and remains undecided about any future comeback despite discussions of a Pacquiao bout.
